Francis Poulenc Gloria

July 24th, 2008

Gloria is a musical work written by Francis Poulenc in 1959 and is considered one of his best works to date. It is scored for a large orchestra including a soprano solo and a backup chorus. The composition was premiered in 1961 by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Gloria is based off a Roman Catholic hymn known normally as the Gloria in Excelsis Deo (”Glory to God in the Highest”, itself part of the Angelic Hymn. Gloria is composed of six movements.

The piece was originally commissioned in honor of Sergei Koussevitsky, a fellow conductor and figurehead of the Koussevitsky Foundation. Poulenc’s version is not the only version released, however, with variations written by Vivaldi and Rutter.
